Seiko Epson traces its origins to Daiwa Kogyo, founded in Suwa in 1942 to manufacture watch parts. In 1959 the business became Suwa Seikosha following the reorganisation of the Suwa operations of Daini Seikosha. Suwa Seikosha and Epson Corporation merged in 1985 to form Seiko Epson Corporation. Epson supplies watch movements through Epson Hong Kong and operates Orient and Orient Star, whose watch business was integrated in 2017. Seiko Epson and Seiko Group Corporation are separately managed listed companies: their historical Hattori-family connections and commercial shareholdings do not make Epson a subsidiary of Seiko Group.
