Grand Seiko is a luxury Japanese watch brand dedicated to the pursuit of accuracy, legibility, and beauty in timepieces, with a unique Japanese sensibility. Born in 1960 with the determination to create watches of high precision and quality that could compete on the world stage, Grand Seiko is renowned for its innovative Spring Drive technology, ultra-precise Hi-Beat mechanical movements, and exquisite Zaratsu mirror polishing technique.
Grand Seiko was launched in 1960 by Seiko as Japan's premier high-end watch line, aimed at creating the most accurate wristwatch in the world. The brand quickly established itself through rigorous in-house certification standards that exceeded Swiss chronometer requirements. Grand Seiko participated in the Observatory Chronometer Competitions in Switzerland, with Daini Seikosha placing 2nd and Suwa Seikosha placing 3rd at the 1967 Neuchâtel Observatory Competition. In 1968, at the Geneva Observatory Competition, Grand Seiko movements took 4th through 10th place—the highest rankings for mechanical wristwatch movements. The iconic 'Grand Seiko Style' design language was established in 1967 with the 44GS. The brand pioneered the first Japanese automatic 10-beat (Hi-Beat) movement in 1968 with the 61GS. In 1969, Grand Seiko released the V.F.A. (Very Fine Adjusted) models achieving ±1 minute per month accuracy. After a period of reduced focus during the quartz era, Grand Seiko was revitalized in 1998. Spring Drive technology, conceived in 1977 and commercially released in 1999, became a Grand Seiko-exclusive movement in 2004. In 2017, Grand Seiko became an independent global luxury watch brand, removing 'Seiko' from its dials and establishing its own distinct identity. The brand operates multiple specialized studios: Shinshu Watch Studio, Studio Shizukuishi, and the Micro Artist Studio for haute horlogerie pieces.
