Any phone is a scanner
Because the barcode is nothing but the stock number, there is no app to install and no lookup service in the middle. A phone camera and a hardware scanner type the exact same characters into search, and the number matches exactly one item. Whoever is holding the watch finds its record in seconds.

One numbering system for everything
Stock numbers live in one registry for your whole organization, so a watch and a spare part can never collide on the same number. You define the prefix and the padding once, the sequence fills in from there, and anything you number by hand takes precedence: the numbers your business already runs on stay exactly as they are.
