Frédérique Constant was founded in 1988 by Dutch entrepreneurs Peter Stas and Aletta Stas-Bax. After four years of development, the first collection of six models, the 18th Century Collection, was released in 1992 with Swiss movements assembled by a Geneva watchmaker. In 1994, the brand launched its first Heart Beat timepiece, featuring an aperture showing the balance wheel, which became the brand's signature. In 2002, Frédérique Constant acquired Alpina Watches. The first in-house manufacture caliber, the FC-910, was launched in 2004. A dedicated manufacture was inaugurated in Plan-les-Ouates in 2006. The first tourbillon manufacture with silicon escapement followed in 2008. In 2015, the brand introduced the first Swiss-made horological smartwatch with an analog dial. In 2016, the Stas family accepted an acquisition offer from Citizen Watch Co. of Japan. In 2021, the FC-810 Monolithic Manufacture introduced a silicon oscillator vibrating at 40 Hz. By 2023, the brand had produced 31 in-house movements.
