Josef Bidlingmaier started the business with his brother Bernhard in 1900 as a jewellery operation. It began assembling wristwatches with purchased Swiss movements in 1918 and introduced its own calibre 2025 in 1928. Later developments included the SA 103 automatic movement in 1951 and the B12 quartz movement in 1973. The company filed for bankruptcy in 1977. The Bifora heritage association records the end of manufacturing in Schwäbisch Gmünd in 1984, while other histories give 1983. This record concerns the historic Bidlingmaier manufacture, not the later Bifora-branded revival.
