Orient is a Japanese watch manufacturer renowned for producing high-quality mechanical watches at accessible price points. The brand is particularly celebrated for its in-house automatic movements and classic dress watch designs, offering exceptional value in the entry-level to mid-range mechanical watch market.
Orient's origins trace back to 1901 when Shogoro Yoshida opened a wholesale pocket watch shop in Ueno, Tokyo. The company evolved through Toyo Tokei Manufacturing (established 1920) before being formally incorporated as Tama Keiki Company on July 13, 1950, in Hino, Tokyo. In 1951, the company was renamed Orient Watch Company and launched its first Orient Star model. Throughout the 1950s-70s, Orient expanded internationally and introduced notable models including the Dynamic (1956), Royal Orient (1960), Grand Prix 100 (1964), the world's thinnest automatic with day-date (Fineness, 1967), and the Tenbeat (1970). Seiko Epson acquired majority ownership in 2001, and Orient became a wholly owned subsidiary in 2009 before being fully integrated into Epson in 2017. Today, all Orient movements are manufactured in-house at Akita Epson Corporation in Yuzawa, Akita, Japan.
