Arcanaut is a pan-Scandinavian independent watch brand known for material experimentation and innovative Nordic design. The brand combines timeless Scandinavian aesthetics with daring, unconventional materials including proprietary D'Arc Matter Swedish slate composite, Fordite, coffee grounds, and blue mussel shells. Cases are machined in Copenhagen with final assembly by Danish watchmakers, while exotic dial materials are developed in Sweden by co-owner James Thompson (Black Badger).
Arcanaut was conceived during a beer-fueled conversation in Copenhagen in 2015 when Anders Brandt criticized friend Simon Goldmann's Swiss watch for poor ergonomics and overcomplicated design. This sparked a three-year development process culminating in the Arc I proof-of-concept release in 2018, limited to 50 pieces which sold out rapidly. The brand officially launched as Arcanaut in 2019. In 2020, renowned materials expert James Thompson (Black Badger), known for collaborations with MB&F, De Bethune, and Sarpaneva, joined as co-owner and Chief of Materials Development. The Arc II D'Arc Matter series followed, establishing the brand's reputation for material innovation. Arcanaut distinguishes itself with a patented integrated square crown design and a commitment to Scandinavian manufacturing.
