D. Dornblüth & Sohn is an independent German watchmaker producing hand-crafted luxury wristwatches using traditional tools and vintage machinery. With an annual output of only 120-180 pieces, the father-and-son manufacture creates timepieces featuring classic German horological elements including three-quarter plates, screwed gold chatons, swan-neck fine adjustment, and hand-engraved movements.
The origins of Dornblüth trace back to 1959, when watchmaker Dieter Dornblüth designed his first movement inspired by a sterling silver pocket watch he had repaired. The plans were shelved when he took over the Beckmann watchmaking business in Kalbe. Forty years later, on Dieter's 60th birthday in October 1999, his son Dirk—also a master watchmaker—presented him with a handmade wristwatch. That evening, father and son sketched out a new caliber on a napkin, founding D. Dornblüth & Sohn. Their first production model was released in 2002. The company expanded to new premises in 2003 and again in 2005. In 2008, they restored the marine chronometer of the Gorch Fock I and released a commemorative limited edition. In 2012, they introduced the Quintus with their fifth caliber, marking their first fully in-house movement.
