Russian watch manufacturer known for rugged mechanical military and dive watches. The name 'Vostok' means 'East' in Russian. Famous for the Komandirskie and Amphibia models, the company was the official supplier to the USSR Ministry of Defense and continues producing robust, affordable mechanical timepieces.
Vostok was established in 1941-1942 when the First Moscow Watch Factory was evacuated to Chistopol, a small town on the Kama River in Tatarstan, during World War II. Initially designated 'Factory 835', the facility focused on military equipment during the war. In 1943, it began manufacturing Kirovskie wristwatches, and by 1945 shifted entirely to watch production. The factory produced its first shock-resistant, dust- and waterproof Kama wristwatch in 1952. In 1962, production earned the large gold medal at the Leipzig International Fair. Since 1965, the factory became the official supplier of the USSR Ministry of Defense, launching the iconic Komandirskie military watches that year, followed by the legendary Amphibia dive watch in 1967. The factory was renamed 'Vostok' in 1969 after its first precision watch model. During the late Soviet period, Vostok watches became popular internationally, with the US military even ordering Komandirskie watches for troops during the 1991 Gulf War due to their robustness and low price. The factory was privatized in 1993 and signed an exclusive distribution agreement with Swiss-based BN-Trading for 500,000 timepieces annually. After bankruptcy in 2010, the company was reorganized and continues production today.
