The Venus Cal. 170 is a revolutionary 12.5 ligne column wheel chronograph introduced in 1936-1937. Unique among Venus movements for using an 8-column wheel (rather than 7) and oscillating pinion (Heuer-style) instead of horizontal clutch. Features distinctive 6-12 subdial arrangement with small seconds at 6:00 and 30/45-minute counter at 12:00. Was much cheaper than competing Valjoux movements. Used by Heuer, Breitling, Gallet, Leonidas, Wittnauer, and Wyler. Production ended 1951, replaced by the cam-switching Cal. 188 family.
