India's largest watch manufacturer and the fifth-largest watch producer globally. A Tata Group company established as a joint venture with Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO), Titan revolutionized the Indian watch market by introducing quartz technology and modern retail experiences. The company has diversified into jewellery (Tanishq), eyewear (Titan Eyeplus), and fashion accessories while maintaining its dominance in the domestic watch market through multiple brands spanning economy to luxury segments.
Titan was conceived in the early 1980s as part of Tata Group's vision to enter the consumer goods sector. The company was inaugurated on July 26, 1984 in Chennai as Titan Watches Limited, a joint venture between Tata Industries and TIDCO. Manufacturing began at a state-of-the-art facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, producing quartz analog electronic watches. In 1986, Titan signed an MoU with Casio to manufacture digital watches. The company partnered with Timex from 1992-1997 before launching its own economy brand Sonata and youth brand Fastrack. In 1993, the company renamed itself Titan Industries as it diversified beyond watches into jewellery with Tanishq (1994). The 2000s saw expansion into eyewear, luxury retail (Helios), and international markets. In 2011, Titan acquired Swiss heritage brand Favre-Leuba to gain European market access, though this was later sold to Ethos in 2023. The company entered wearables and smartwatches in 2016. Today Titan operates over 2,000 retail stores worldwide and remains publicly traded on both BSE and NSE as a constituent of major indices.
