Sarpaneva is a Finnish independent watch brand founded in 2003 by Stepan Sarpaneva (born 1970) in Helsinki at the historic Cable Factory (Kaapelitehdas). Stepan comes from a distinguished artistic family—his father was jewelry artist Pentti Sarpaneva and his uncle was industrial designer Timo Sarpaneva. After training at the Finnish School of Watchmaking and WOSTEP in Switzerland, Stepan worked for Piaget, Parmigiani (as Kari Voutilainen's right-hand man), Vianney Halter, and Christophe Claret before returning to Finland to create his own watches. Sarpaneva Watches are known for their distinctive nouveau-Gothic designs, signature Korona scalloped cases, and moon face complications. In 2009, Stepan won the Red Dot Design Award for his Korona K3 Black Moon. The Sarpaneva Moonment calibre, introduced in 2018-2019, is an extremely precise moon phase mechanism requiring adjustment only once every 14,000 years. The brand also operates S.U.F Helsinki (SarpanevaUhrenFabrik), launched in 2004 for more affordable, larger-batch watches inspired by Finnish landscapes, legends, and engineering pioneers.
