LeCoultre was the US market branding for Jaeger-LeCoultre watches, used approximately from the 1930s until the mid-1970s. Due to US import tariffs on complete watches, movements and dials were shipped from Switzerland while cases were manufactured locally in the US. This arrangement allowed the brand to reduce import costs while maintaining Swiss movement quality. Watches sold under the LeCoultre name were distributed through the Longines-Wittnauer Watch Company via Vacheron & Constantin-LeCoultre Watch Inc.
The LeCoultre brand emerged in the US market following the 1937 merger between the Swiss LeCoultre & Cie (founded 1833) and Parisian watchmaker Edmond Jaeger. While the combined entity was known as Jaeger-LeCoultre in Europe, US import regulations with high tariffs on complete watches prompted a different strategy for the American market. From the late 1930s, watches destined for the US bore only the 'LeCoultre' name on their dials, signifying their status as partially Swiss-made (movements and dials) and partially US-made (cases). Distribution was handled through Longines-Wittnauer Watch Company, with Vacheron & Constantin-LeCoultre Watch Inc. serving as the formal division. The LeCoultre-branded watches catered to American tastes, featuring a higher proportion of gold and gold-plated cases compared to European models. Popular models included the Memovox (marketed as 'Wrist-Alarm' in the US), the Galaxy with its distinctive mystery dial featuring floating diamond hands, and various elegant dress watches. By 1969, marketing materials began acknowledging that these watches were 'sold in foreign countries under the name of Jaeger-LeCoultre.' The transition to unified Jaeger-LeCoultre branding was completed by the mid-1970s, ending approximately four decades of the separate LeCoultre US identity.
